Growing up with social networks and now in the TikTok boom, has made girls know much more about skin care and makeup from a young age. Adolescence is a stage in which we like to experiment and learn about makeup and skincare in order to begin creating the foundations of our personal care routines.
This year we are seeing a boom of 10-13 year old girls in makeup stores, who have called them #SephoraKids on TikTok. They arrive at the store with a clear list of the products they want, often because they have gone viral on TikTok or have been recommended by their favorite creators, but what many do not know is that many of the products they buy have ingredients that When used at their age they cause more harm than good.
In adolescence the body naturally goes through many hormonal changes and your skin continues to develop. Some ingredients can cause acne, irritation and skin sensitivity, which is why we took the task of making a guide to ingredients that you should avoid.
Ingredients to avoid (-16 years old):
Strong Assets
Acids such as glycolic acid, mandelic acid, lactic and kojic acid. Although they are beneficial for adult skin since they are used as chemical exfoliants and are often present in products to treat acne and blemishes, they can be too aggressive for the developing skin of adolescent girls. Its use can cause irritation, dryness and peeling, negatively affecting the skin barrier. We recommend looking for gentler alternatives such as Hyaluronic Acid, herbal extracts such as rosemary, melaleuca extract, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Azelaic Acid, niacinamide.
Retinoids (Vitamin A)
Although known for their anti-aging benefits, retinoids may be too powerful for young skin. They can cause redness, peeling, and increase sensitivity to the sun, not to mention that unnecessary use can be counterproductive.
Artificial Fragrances and Colors
They can cause irritation and allergies, especially in sensitive skin. They can trigger adverse skin reactions, from redness to itching. Opt for products without “fragrance free” fragrances or flavored only with natural essences and look for makeup that uses fruit and vegetable extracts, natural clay, turmeric, Matcha Green Tea Leaves, Mineral Oxides as colorant.
Parabens
A preservative commonly used in makeup and skincare. It is important to avoid it since there are studies that suggest that they have hormonal effects. Its prolonged use has been associated with possible endocrine alterations (Deregulated Hormones, causing reproductive problems, metabolic problems, thyroid disorders, affecting development and growth, etc.) a reason for caution in adolescence. Look for paraben-free products as a precaution.
Mineral Oils
Common in makeup products, mineral oils can clog pores and contribute to skin problems. In teenagers, the skin tends to be more prone to breakouts, this could worsen existing conditions.
The products used at this stage should seek to keep the skin clean, hydrated and protected, and little by little get to know the world of makeup in an educational and fun way. This is why we create Stars , a brand created especially for teenagers, focused on creating the basic products for their routine with carefully selected ingredients to care for their skin and hormones.

(2) Blush and Lip Gloss:
Add a touch of blush for a healthy look and a soft lip gloss is a great option for a touch of color and shine that highlights lips while maintaining a natural look. We created our multistick blush that gives you a touch of color and you can use it as a blush, lipstick or eye shadow. The best thing is that it is made with 100% natural dyes and has no sulfates, parabens, silicones, or anything that could hurt your hormones or skin.
